Using in-house resources, we built a custom digital publishing system to distribute 360 video and that could be consumed in native apps and on the web. The platform created new ad revenue opportunities for Discovery and positioned the company as an innovative leader in the booming VR storytelling industry.
The native mobile apps for iOS and Android feature an immersive experience by either using your phone as a magic window into the 360 video or utilizing Google Cardboard to wear your phone like a headset. To create the headmounted display apps for Oculus and HTC Vive, we collaborated with a development vendor to implement our design of these experiences and ensure we maintained brand consistency across all our different platforms.
With few existing products on the market, my team explored the emerging UI patterns within the industry and explored new patterns through rapid prototyping. We created a family of experiences that included mobile apps, responsive website and native apps for head-mounted displays (Oculus and HTC Vive). Our initial website concept was much more experiential until we realized that only a small fraction of the audience would visit the website. This led to a simple grid based layout with a 360 video player.
